Los Espookys Couldn’t Use Betty Boop

According to Vulture a popular HBO show by the name of Espookys created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, they wanted to incorporate “Betty Boop” into their franchise.

They explained on Seth Meyers’ show that they wanted to get Betty Boop involved for Season 2 because she is a Latin icon. But it turned out that Betty was way out of their budget because the “fictional character” and her booking fee was too much.

Seth Meyers who was shocked at why anyone wanted to obtain copyright permission for the character explained in his own words that “nobody today” wants to use Betty Boop and indicated that Betty Boop is outdated. Seth was told how big Betty Boop is in modern South America, they said she’s a big deal. They were told that the “Boop” estate the Fleischer Studios, it was no deal. They asked the Fleischers, “how much money?” and the Fleischers told them how much they wanted which was $$$ over budget and apparently too much of a high fee for public domain cartoons. They tried to negotiate at a lower fee but the Fleischers responded by saying no.

HBO said they would rather have Nicole Kidman than Betty Boop.
