Charlie Chance

You wouldn’t believe this. But two characters from the Charlie Chance series by Play’n Go clearly rip off Betty Boop. The creators claim that the characters art style was inspired by Max Fleischer.

What in the world of Cuphead is going on here?

The second is the She-Devil, she is apparently the epitome of a femme fatale. She is really is Charlie Chance’s worst nightmare. Cunning, beautiful and deadly. This is another obvious parody of Betty Boop, but she looks more like that Alice Angel character from that terrible video game Bendy and the Ink Machine and or was it Bendy and the Dark Revival? Guess that Alice Angel design was not so special after all. It is very easily emulated here.

Hell’s Bells in the game seems to be a reference to Betty Boop in Red Hot Mamma.

The Cleopatra character from the apparent game Curse of Cleopatra steals more than just copying Betty, she also steals Betty’s iconic pose.

The Betty Boop-looking Cleopatra lives in Ancient Egypt and is a merciless ruler who Charlie has awoken from her slumber. I guess everyone wants a parody of Betty Boop, but they can’t handle or be bothered to licence the real deal.

Potential lawsuit? No. Parody is protected. It is often considered fair use. I can’t image the Fleischer Studios or King Features suing. If they did, they sure would look silly in court. Then again with the price of Betty, who would want to licence Betty!? When you can create your own characters? And besides Betty in animation and virtual content today is too cringe. Especially in the animated world, and her new voice acting is horrid. Thankfully these copy-cats or wannabe Betty Boop girls do not talk. I mean did anyone see those new Betty Boop commercials? They were so lame and trashy. So yeah, I guess making a parody of Betty is best.

Best of all you don’t have to pay to licence the character.
